A Community Nephrologist is a clinically focused Nephrologist, who either spends a majority of his/her time outside of an academic centre, or who has limited access to the activities of an academic centre.

Dr. Bhanu Prasad did his medical school in India and completed his Nephrology training at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan and practices as a Nephrologist in Regina. Apart from maintaining a heavy clinical practice, he is also actively engaged in clinical research and has partnerships with colleagues across Canada. He leads a team of researchers that are investigating loin pain hematuria syndrome (LPHS). His other research interests include the use of renal denervation (for hypertension and for pain relief), bone health, and frailty in CKD patients.  He is delighted to be part of a dynamic group of CSN Board of Directors and is passionate about increasing community Nephrology participation at the CSN.

Dr. Harmon is a Nephrologist at Health Sciences North in Sudbury, where he has practiced since 2015. He completed his medical school and Internal Medicine training at Dalhousie University and went on to a Nephrology Fellowship at the University of Ottawa. He is an Assistant Professor at NOSM and a Program Director for the Sudbury Internal Medicine Residency training program. He has been involved with the Canadian Society of Nephrology completing a 4 year term as a board member.

Dr Amit Bagga is an active Clinical Nephrologist within the Division of Nephrology at the Windsor Regional Hospital. His medical education including nephrology specialization was in London, Ontario. Hobbies include table tennis, percussion ( tabla )& backyard frisbee with the kids.  Dr. Bagga has previously been the President of the Essex County Medical Society, prior Chief of Nephrology from 2015 to 2017, and recently awarded the 2021 Schulich School of Medicine Hippocratic Council Windsor Clinician Teaching Award.

Dr. Ann Bugeja completed her Bachelor of Science and medical degrees at the University of Toronto. She completed her postgraduate training in internal medicine and nephrology at the University of Toronto. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa.  She is a certified specialist in Clinical Hypertension with the American Society of Hypertension and the lead for the Living Kidney Donation Program and In-Centre Nocturnal Hemodialysis (INHD)  Programs at The Ottawa Hospital.  Dr. Bugeja is a Distinguished Teacher in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa.  Her research interests are living kidney donor evaluation and outcomes, hypertension management and management of INHD patients.

Dr. Dunsmore completed her internal medicine training at the University of Manitoba and nephrology training at the University of Toronto. She has been working in Manitoba since 2012 and at Seven Oaks General Hospital in Winnipeg since 2014. She is a lecturer with the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba and is involved with administration in Undergraduate Medical Education. In addition to general clinical nephrology she has an interest in interventional nephrology.

Dr. Glick is a clinical Nephrologist working in Nanaimo, BC. She has played a role in local renal leadership as the Medical Lead for Central Vancouver Island Nephrology 2016-2020, pre-dialysis clinic redesign and a new post-Transplant clinic. Interests include access to Nephrology care for remote and underserved populations. She is grateful for coastal living, and enjoys long distancing running, biking and inconveniently large dogs.

Born and raised in the very community that he has proudly served for the last 14 years. Since graduating from Bathurst High School, he went on to chemistry and medical degrees at Dalhousie University, core internal medicine training at the University of Saskatchewan and returned to Halifax for nephrology fellowship training. He then started practice in the 100,000-patient catchment area of Northeastern New Brunswick, where he is one of two nephrologists practicing in both official languages. His general nephrology practice includes the full spectrum of CKD including in-centre and satellite hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, pre- and post-transplant clinics and multidisciplinary advanced CKD care. He shares duties with another locally born nephrologist with locum help from his colleagues at l’Hôpital de Verdun in Montreal. His interests including skiing and traveling to warmer climates in winter and enjoying all that the East Coast has to offer in the summer.

Dr. Ilan Lenga is a clinical nephrologist, Chief Information Officer and Chief Medical Information Officer at Lakeridge Health, a large multi-site community hospital network in Ontario.  He has a passion for the role of medical information technology in clinical transformation, and is an active promoter of standardized care and improving data quality.  He completed medical school, internal medicine, and nephrology training at the University of Toronto. .  He is a lecturer at the University of Toronto, an adjunct assistant professor at Queen’s University, and a practicing nephrologist with a focus on chronic kidney disease and dialysis care.

Dr. Daniel Schwartz is the program lead for the Fraser Health peritoneal dialysis program. He received his training at the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto.   His clinical interests are focused on peritoneal dialysis, interventional nephrology and advanced stage CKD management.  He also has a keen interest in knowledge translation at the point of care and the intersection of information technology with clinical medicine.
