About The Committee

The major purpose of the Education Committee of the CSN is to plan all educational and related activities for the membership.

These events and activities will be ongoing throughout the year and not limited to the annual meeting.

This committee will be advisory to the CSN President and Executive who will make final decisions about all educational events. On behalf of the Education Committee, the Chair will be in close communication with the CSN President and other Executive members throughout the year.

The Chair will present an annual report from the Education Committee to the President at the annual CSN Board of Directors and annual general meeting.

Dr. Kaushal completed his medical school and Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Manitoba, followed by Nephrology and Hypertension Subspecialty training at the University of Toronto. He was the Eliot Phillipson Clinician Educator Training Program fellow at the University of Toronto from 2015-2017. During this time, he completed a fellowship at the Wilson Centre for Research in Education, and M.Sc. in Health Practitioner Teacher Education. He is a Clinician Teacher and the Education Site Coordinator for Nephrology at University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital. His clinical interests include hypertension, dialysis, and living kidney donation. His educational interests include developing new curricular innovations including simulation, with a focus on how to tackles situations of uncertainty.

Dr. Juliya Hemmett
Vice-Chair, Education Committee

Dr. Juliya Hemmett completed medical school and Internal Medicine residency at the University of British Columbia, and her Nephrology and Home Dialysis training at Western University. She now works as a clinical nephrologist and Nephrology Fellowship Program Director at the University of Calgary. Dr. Hemmett is an active member in the Canadian Society of Nephrology. She has served as the CSN Education Committee co-chair since 2016 and participated in several program planning initiatives and committees for the Society, including the CSN Annual General Meeting and the World Congress of Nephrology local organizing committee. Her research interests are in quality improvement and medical education.  Outside of work, she spends her free time with her husband and kids playing in the mountains and enjoying local cuisine.

Dr. Lavanya Bathini

Dr. Bathini completed her undergraduate training and medical school at the University of Alberta. She then went on to complete her Internal Medicine and Nephrology training at the University of Western Ontario. She is currently enrolled in the University of Western Ontario Clinician Investigator Program with plans to gain expertise in glomerular disease and management of chronic kidney disease in pregnancy at the University of Toronto. She will also complete her Masters in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

Dr. Marisa Battistella

Marisa is a pharmacist in the nephrology program at the University Health Network and Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy. As Pharmacy Clinician Scientist, the objective of her research program focuses on translational studies that address unmet clinical needs across the entire spectrum of pharmacotherapy care in the CKD patient, from pre-prescribing (using genomics to guide the selection of drugs) to deprescribing (tapering, stopping, discontinuing or withdrawing drugs), with the goal of managing polypharmacy (use of multiple medications) and improving patient outcomes. She is currently the external liaison officer for the Renal Pharmacists Network.

Dr. Jason Bau

Dr. Jason Bau is a PGY5 nephrology fellow at the University of Calgary.  He received his MD/PhD from the University of Calgary before completing internal medicine residency at the University of Ottawa. He educational interests include promoting nephrology teaching at the medical student and resident level. His research interests are in biomarkers of kidney disease particularly in glomerulonephritis and transplant allografts.

Dr. Branko Braam

Dr. Braam is Professor of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Physiology at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He is also the Division Director for the Division of Nephrology as well as Alberta Health Services Edmonton Zone Chief for Nephrology. He is a practicing internist/nephrologist within AB Kidney Care North. As a clinician he has a special interest in hypertension, volume regulation and heart/kidney interactions. He is director of the Blood Pressure Assessment Clinic.  Dr. Braam obtained a PhD in Physiology in 1994 and was trained in Utrecht, The Netherlands, and Tulane University in New Orleans.  He obtained his Nephrology and General Internal Medicine degree in The Netherlands between 1994-2001. He holds the Kidney Health Translational Research Chair. Dr. Braam's research involves basic mechanisms of hypertension, consequences of derangement of renal function for the systemic environment (including the cardiorenal syndrome), fluid volume regulation and hypertension care.

Dr. Pierre Antoine Brown

Dr. Pierre Antoine Brown graduated from medical school at the University of Ottawa and completed residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Nephrology, both at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital. He completed a Master's in Science in Medical Informatics, from Northwestern University. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, University of Ottawa and is as a staff Nephrologist at The Ottawa Hospital. In addition, he is the Medical Director for Hemodialysis at The Ottawa Hospital and for the Cystic Kidney Disease Clinic at The Ottawa Hospital. His clinical interests include hemodialysis, PCKD, peritoneal dialysis and general nephrology.  His academic interests include Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement projects. He has published articles in peer-reviewed journals on varied topics including, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and pre-dialysis care. His current research interests include the application of information technology to improve health-care outcomes and QA projects. Clinical Interests:  Hemodialysis, CKD, general nephrology. Educational Interests:  Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in nephrology.

Dr. Azim Gangji

Dr. Azim Gangji is Professor of Medicine and the current Program Director of Nephrology and AFC/AST Director of Solid Organ Transplantation at McMaster University. He is also the Vice President of Education at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and is the chair of the RCPSC AFC Accreditation Committee and chair of the CST Education Committee. Dr. Gangji has a strong interest in medical education and has introduced various innovative programs including introducing a case-based learning program, virtual learning and assessment and a novel nephrology-palliative care curriculum. In competency by design, he was acknowledged for introducing a novel curriculum. He is the recipient of the prestigious Donald R. Wilson/RCPSC award for introducing innovative methods of teaching of CanMEDS Roles. He has also received the CSN Clinical Nephrology Teaching Award and the Canadian Association of Medical Education Merit Award in Education. Dr. Gangji's clinical interest is in the field of kidney transplantation and glomerulonephritis and associated research in evaluating the role of immunosuppressive therapy and renal transplant fibrosis.

Dr. Hildebrand completed her Nephrology Fellowship at Western University in 2012, followed by a Master of Sciences in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Western University and additional training in Glomerulonephritis and Renal Diseases of Pregnancy at the University of Toronto. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Division of Nephrology at the University of Alberta with a clinical and research focus on improving care and outcomes of patients with glomerular disease.

Jolanta Karpinski is a Nephrologist at the Ottawa Hospital, working mostly with renal transplant patients out of the Riverside Campus. Her academic focus is in medical education particularly PGME and Continuing Professional Development with previous roles as the Nephrology Program Director in Ottawa 1999-2005, Chair of the Nephrology Specialty Committee at the RCPSC 2002-2008 and Director of the Faculty Development Office at the Faculty of Medicine in Ottawa 2005-2010.

Dr. Ilan Lenga is a clinical nephrologist, Chief Information Officer and Chief Medical Information Officer at Lakeridge Health, a large multi-site community hospital network in Ontario. He has a passion for the role of medical information technology in clinical transformation, and is an active promoter of standardized care and improving data quality. He completed medical school, internal medicine, and nephrology training at the University of Toronto. He is a lecturer at the University of Toronto, an adjunct assistant professor at Queen's University, and a practicing nephrologist with a focus on chronic kidney disease and dialysis care.

Dr. Damien Noone

Dr. Damien Noone is a Staff Nephrologist in the Division of Paediatric Nephrology at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, and Program Director for Paediatric Nephrology. He holds the academic appointment of Associate Professor with the University of Toronto Department of Paediatrics. He completed clinical nephrology training in Great Ormond Street Hospital in London as well as at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, where he also completed the Clinician Investigator Program with an MSc at the University of Toronto in the Program of Cell Biology. Dr. Noone has focused his clinical work in the area of vasculitis, glomerular diseases and dialysis. He also plays a leading role in nephrology education locally and nationally and is Program Director for the Division of Nephrology. During his first two years as Program Director he completed the Education Scholars Program, a longitudinal leadership development program for educators.  He also has roles within the Department of Paediatrics and the University of Toronto in Faculty Development, especially around Competence by Design (CBD), competency-based medical education (CBME) and in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) where he is a mentor with the Diversity Mentorship Program at the University of Toronto and a champion in promoting equity, diversity and inclusion at SickKids.

Kristen Pederson completed her medical school at the University of Calgary, pediatric residency at Memorial University of Newfoundland and pediatric nephrology residency at the University of Toronto. She has been working at the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital since 2003. Her clinical interests are CKD and dialysis in children and renal-rheumatological diseases. She is currently the President for the Canadian Association of Pediatric Nephrology.

Faisal Rehman

Dr. Rehman is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario. He is the Clinical Clerkship Coordinator and Site Chief for Internal Medicine at the London Health Sciences Centre - University Hospital. He was Program Director for the Nephrology Residency Program at the University of Western Ontario from 2005 but stood down from the position in July 2011 when he took on a wider scope of responsibility with the Site Chief position. Dr. Rehman completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacology (1993) at the University of Alberta. He then went on to get his Doctor of Medicine Degree at Queen's University (1998) followed by his subspecialty certification in Nephrology at the University of Western Ontario (2003) and in 2004 received a Masters in Medical Education Degree from the University of Toronto University. He is actively involved in teaching Nephrology and Internal Medicine to medical students, residents and clinical fellows at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University. He also runs a very busy clinical practice in his specialty of Nephrology.

Dr. Siddiqui graduated from medical school from the University of Ottawa and thereafter completed internal medicine residency at Western University and nephrology training at the University of Toronto. She holds a Masters in Community Health Sciences (focus on Health Practitioner Teacher Education) from the University of Toronto. She is a staff nephrologist at Toronto East Health Network (Michael Garron Hospital) in Toronto, and continues to have a strong interest in medical student and resident education.

Weber

Dr. Catherine Weber

Dr. Catherine Weber completed medical school and Internal Medicine residency at the University of Manitoba.  Thereafter, she completed a Nephrology residency, the Clinical Investigator Program and a Master’s of Health Science at the University of British Columbia.  She now works as a clinical nephrologist at McGill University and is currently in her 3rd term as Program Director of the Nephrology Training Program. Dr. Weber is an active CSN member and has served on the CSN Education Committee since 2021.  She really enjoys medical education and has played an integral role in CSN pre-course planning.  Outside of work, you can often find her at an arena cheering on her son at a hockey game or on the side of a Laurentian (or higher!) mountain skiing, biking, or hiking with her family.

A. Membership

  • Chair: is a member of the CSN Council, appointed by the President, on recommendation of the previous Education Committee Chair, for a 3 year term and may serve for no more than 2 consecutive terms.
  • Membership: Chair of the Royal College Specialty Committee in Nephrology, President of the CSN, and President of the Canadian Association of Pediatric Nephrologists automatically become members of the Education Committee. The Royal College Specialty Committee Chair will become a member of the CSN Council. At least four more members from the general membership (one representing pediatric nephrology, and at least one from the community-based nephrologists), proposed by the Education Committee Chair, will be elected to serve for a 2 year term. In addition, there will be one resident representative selected by Chair at recommendation of Committee and/or Program Directors. All members may serve for no more than 2 consecutive terms, unless a member becomes Chair, in which case she/he may serve a full term as chair.

B. Responsibilities

CHAIR

  • The Chair will report to the CSN Executive, through the President. The Chair will organize committee meetings/communication throughout the year. Communication to the general membership will be through publication in the CSN Newsletter, via emails sent to membership from CSN secretariat, or on the CSN Web site. The Chair will prepare the annual report of the Education Committee and present it to the CSN Council at the annual general meeting.
  • The Chair will assume the duties required to maintain / renew the status of the CSN as a Royal College approved accreditor of CME events, during his/her term of office (see below).
  • The Chair will choose a CSN member to organize / coordinate the Annual Review Course (see below)

MEMBERS

  • The Members will represent the CSN members and assist the Chair in the planning and organization of all education events including those at the annual meeting. The Members report to the Chair.
  • One member of the Education Committee will represent the CSN on the Royal College Nephrology Specialty Committee
  • Members may be asked to serve on Focus Groups as part of the CSN’s accreditation process for approval of CME events for CPD

C. Postgraduate Nephrology Education

  • The CSN Education Committee will communicate and maintain a close liaison with the Royal College Specialty Committee in Nephrology. Jointly these committees, through shared goals will seek to continually improve and enhance the educational program of nephrology trainees and the continuing education of nephrologists in Canada. Together they will seek new educational areas of interest relevant to the maintenance of professional competency and academic excellence.
  • The CSN will sponsor an annual Nephrology Review Course. This course will meet learning needs of trainees and established nephrologists. The CSN Executive and/or Council will seek corporate sponsorship for this event. The coordinator / organizer of this course will be a member of the Education Committee.
  • The Education Committee will seek to inform Nephrology Trainees across Canada about research training opportunities, job opportunities and the importance of becoming CSN members.

D. Continuing Education

  • The Education Committee will provide continuing education programs for the general membership of the CSN (adult and pediatric) in conjunction with the annual meeting and throughout the year. By communication throughout the year with the membership via the CSN Newsletter, email, and web site, topics for refresher courses, provide the forum for communication of upcoming education events.
  • Category 1 CPD approval will be sought for all appropriate CSN-sponsored Nephrology CME/.CPD events.
  • The Education Committee will review applications for approval of CME events organized by physician members of the CSN, and provide guidance and assistance to organizers in terms of conformity with Royal College regulations concerning these events.
  • The Education Committee is responsible for development, support, and guidance re: creation of other Royal College approved educational activities.
  • As long as the CSN remains a Royal College accredited provider of CME, the Education Committee is responsible for review of applications from other physician and non-physician organizations for approval of CME events for Royal College credits.

E. Funding

The Education Committee has no direct responsibility for fund-raising to support educational events. However, the committee is responsible for ensuring that relevant guidelines are followed by the CSN in terms of its interaction with corporate financial sponsors of educational events.
