Karthik Tennankore

Dr. Karthik Tennankore received his MD at the University of Western Ontario, and completed Internal Medicine and Nephrology at Dalhousie University. He went on to complete a two year clinical fellowship in home dialysis at the Toronto General Hospital (University of Toronto), and concurrently obtained a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology through Harvard University.

He joined the Dalhousie Division of Nephrology in 2013 and is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and the QEII Foundation Endowed Chair in Transplantation Research. His research interests are aimed at improving the health of dialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients with a focus on frailty and how it impacts clinical outcomes. In addition, he is heavily involved in both investigator-led and industry clinical trials and he is the current executive committee co-chair and scientific operations committee co-lead for the Canadian Nephrology Trials Network.

Dr. Pinsk is a Professor of Pediatrics and Child Health at the University of Manitoba and participates in an academic practice of pediatric nephrology. He is Past -Chair of the Royal College Subspecialty Committee in Nephrology /Pediatric Nephrology, Canadian Counselor for the International Pediatric Nephrology Association, a Counsellor for the Medical Council of Canada, as well as holding a directorship in undergraduate medical education his home university. Dr. Pinsk has been running HD simulation workshops since 2011 at the CSN, and more recently at the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology/ PAS meeting and several university sites across the country.

Dr . Ratna Samanta is an Assistant Professor at McGill University, and the MGH Site Clerkship Director for the Internal Medicine Program.  She obtained her Masters in Epidemiology at Yale University,  then completed her training in Glomerular Diseases at the University of Toronto. After joining McGill, Dr. Samanta initiated the MUHC Glomerulonephritis clinic and currently serves as the Nephrology consultant for the McGill Lupus/Vasculitis  Clinic. Dr. Samanta is the McGill co-investigator for the Canadian Glomerulonephritis Registry, a recent initiative with the aim to personalize diagnosis and therapies for glomerular diseases, as well as several other trials looking at various consequences of glomerular disease.  Dr. Samanta has also worked in conjunction with NephCure, a charitable organization devoted to patients with glomerular diseases, to organize the first Montreal-based patient conference to heighten patients’ understanding of glomerular disease and treatment opportunities.

Dr Pierre-Olivier Fiset is a staff Anatomical Pathologist at the McGill University Health Centre (Glen site) and assistant professor of the Department of Pathology of McGill University. He completed his residency in Anatomical Pathology at McGill University with a fellowship in Thoracic Pathology. His practice includes Pulmonary, Renal, Gastrointestinal, and Biomarker and Molecular Pathology. His research interests include biomarker testing in lung and gastrointestinal cancers, inflammatory microenvironments and transplant associated malignancies.

Michael Mengel

Dr Mengel is Chair and Medical Director for Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Alberta and with Alberta Precision Laboratories Ltd. in Edmonton, Canada.

He studied medicine at the Semmelweiss University in Budapest, Hungary before going on to specialise in pathology and further in transplantation pathology and nephropathology. Before moving to Edmonton provided transplant pathology service at the Hannover Medical School, Germany. As a sub-specialized Transplantation and Renal Pathologist, Dr. Mengel is engaged in various international sub-specialty societies related to nephropathology and organ transplantation and has published widely in his field. His current work is focused on applying molecular techniques to biopsy specimens, with the aim to increase diagnostic precision in organ transplantation.

Dr. Daniel Muruve

Daniel A. Muruve is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Calgary. He is a member of the Immunology Research Group in the Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases. Dr. Muruve is also a practicing nephrologist in the Calgary zone of Alberta Health Services. He is the Section Chief for Nephrology in the Department of Medicine, University of Calgary and Medical Director of the Alberta Kidney Care - South for Alberta Health Services.

Dr. Muruve graduated with an MD degree from the University of Manitoba in 1989. He did his post-graduate medical training at numerous Universities including a Renal Fellowship at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, Harvard University in Boston, MA, USA. Following the completion of his medical training, he completed a Research Fellowship in Immunology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, Harvard Institutes of Medicine.

Dr. Muruve’s research expertise is in the areas of innate immunity, inflammation and kidney disease. Currently, his research program examines the role of the innate immune system, with a specific focus on the NLR (Nod-like receptor) family of proteins and inflammasomes in the biology of disease, including acute and chronic kidney diseases. The cellular and molecular biology of the renal epithelium and the role of the immune system in kidney injury and fibrosis are significant interests in the laboratory. Dr. Muruve has also led the establishment of a precision medicine and translational research program for kidney and glomerular diseases. Dr. Muruve is the Director of the Biobank for the Molecular Classification of Kidney Disease that provides a direct link to clinical patient samples as well as a clinicopathologic database to enable translational research in biomarkers, molecular epidemiology and genetics in kidney disease.

Dr. Bhanu Prasad did his medical school in India and completed his Nephrology training at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. He currently works as a staff Nephrologist in Regina as part of the Saskatchewan Health Authority. He currently serves as the Medical lead for the home therapies program in his Institution. Apart from maintaining a heavy clinical practice, he is also engaged in clinical research and collaborates with colleagues across Canada. His main research interests include the use of renal denervation in lowering blood pressure in patients with CKD and for pain relief in patients with Loin Pain Hematuria Syndrome. He is delighted to be part of a dynamic group of CSN Board of Directors.

Completed residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Nephrology at UBC (Completed 2018).

Then completed a 2-year Masters in Health Administration at UBC (2018-2020)

While completing his Masters, he also did an Administrative Fellowship with BC Renal, where his work was focussed on optimizing care for patients following acute kidney injury. He is also involved in research in the areas of anemia management and atrial fibrillation management in CKD.

He is currently a clinical Nephrologist and Internist at Royal Columbian Hospital in Fraser Health. His Nephrology practice includes inpatient and outpatient nephrology, post transplant care, and PD catheter insertions.  He is also the Vascular Access lead for the Fraser Health nephrology group.

He is also the Fraser Health Lead for the BC Interdisciplinary COVID Care Network, and set up 2 interdisciplinary post COVID Recovery Clinics in Fraser Health.

Dr. Auguste obtained a BSc. (Hon) from Carleton University, an MD from McMaster University and completed his internal medicine and nephrology residencies at the University of Toronto. He also completed advanced training with a clinical fellowship in home dialysis at the University Health Network and a Master of Science in System Leadership and Innovation from the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. He also obtained a Certificate in Quality Improvement Patient Safety (CQuIPS) from the Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (C-QuIPS). He currently has interests in developing innovative tools for home dialysis training and improving patient selection pathways for all forms of independent dialysis.

Dr. Silva graduated from Evangelica Medical School in El Salvador. She completed Internal Medicine Residency training at Queen's University and obtained Nephrology fellowship from the University of Western Ontario. She is certified as a Hypertension Specialist by the American Society of Hypertension (now known as American Heart Association). Dr. Silva’s clinical interests are in the area of Hypertension, Peritoneal Dialysis and Glomerulonephritis. Her positions include: Staff Nephrologist at Trillium Health Partners since 2012; Co-Chair of the Mississauga Hypertension Clinic, founded in 2014; and Co-Chair Peritoneal Dialysis Council, Trillium Health Partners (THP). She is one of the Clinician leads in the opening of the Glomerulonephritis Clinic at Trillium Health Partners, May 2019. In terms of research and education, Dr. Silva obtained Investigator status, Institute for Better Health, 2018; and is a Clinical Lecturer for the University of Toronto, since 2013

Adeera Levin MD, FRCPC, is currently a Professor of Medicine at University of BC and the Executive director of the BC Provincial Renal Agency, an organization which manages and co-ordinates the care of patients with kidney disease in the province of BC, and which has developed and maintained the provincial registry for renal patients. She is the Chair of Curriculum Task Force for the Kidney Research Scientist Core Education and National Training Program — KRESCENT Program.  She was the Chair of the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO), CKD Work group for the updated guidelines 2012. Her research and clinical activities focus on chronic kidney disease, co morbidities associated with CKD mechanisms of disease and health outcomes research. She is active in mentoring young investigators in kidney related research, and holds numerous grants for clinical studies.  She has received funding from peer reviewed organizations such as CIHR (Canadian Institute of Health Research), The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Michael Smith Foundation and the Ministry of Health Services BC. She has received numerous awards and recognitions of her work, including the Kidney Foundation  of Canada Research Medal of Excellence, 2014; and the Order of Canada 2015. She is the immediate past president of the International Society of Nephrology (2015-2017).

Involved as a medical educator for over 23 years. After completing his MD at Memorial University in Newfoundland in 1994 he went to Queen's to complete his Core Internal Medicine Training and was Chief Resident in Internal Medicine and the opportunities to teach began to present themselves. Continuing with his Nephrology Fellowship at the University of Toronto 1997-1999 and was Ward Chief at U of T from 199-2001 charged with oversight of teaching activity on the inpatient service at TGH, developed a dialysis seminar series for nephrology Fellows and attending physicians as a standing teaching round and received a New Staff Teaching Award.

He moved to the University of Saskatchewan in 2001, supervised Undergraduate teaching at the College of Medicine for over 9 years, received numerous Undergraduate Medical School Class teacher of the Year Awards, one University of Saskatchewan Teacher of the Year award, presented the address to the Graduating Class on 2 occasions, received a CAME award as provincial teacher/educator of the year. Served as Assistant Program Director for Core Internal Medicine for several years, moved on to establish (no prior program) a Royal College Training Program in Adult Nephrology and currently serve as its Program Director. Was Chair of the Canadian Society of Nephrology Education Committee for several years and received the CSN Distinguished Service Award. I was a Royal College Examiner in Nephrology for several years as well as serving on the National Sub specialty Committee for Nephrology and its inaugural CBD development. I sit on the Royal College PLDC Committee, on CACME committee for AFMC and am the CPD Educator RAC-2 for the Royal College

Dr. Joslyn Conley graduated from the University of Calgary in 2011 with her Nephrology fellowship and a MSc in Epidemiology.

Since that time, Joslyn has built a multifaceted, rewarding community nephrology career in Kamloops, BC.

The community practice allows her to use the full scope of her nephrology training; including GN, post transplant, CKD, home dialysis modalities and inpatient care.  Joslyn is involved with research, education and administration on a local, regional and provincial level.

She is also a single mom of two teenagers, and just got back from the West Coast Trail.

Joslyn would say she is “truly living the dream”.

Hobbies include table tennis, percussion ( tabla )& backyard frisbee with the kids.  Dr. Bagga has previously been the President of the Essex County Medical Society, prior Chief of Nephrology from 2015 to 2017, and recently awarded the 2021 Schulich School of Medicine Hippocratic Council Windsor Clinician Teaching Award.
