CSN Vascular Access Working Group

Canadian nephrology practice disproportionately relies on central venous catheters, a trend which has been increasing over time. Under the leadership of Drs. David Mendelssohn and Jenn MacRae (workgroup chair), the CSN Vascular Access Working Group has prepared a report for the CSN membership and other stakeholders. The purpose of this report is to provide recommendations to CSN, provincial and local organizations and nephrologists aimed at increasing the proportion of incident and prevalent hemodialysis patients with functioning AV fistulas. The VAWG and the CSN suggest that CSN members use the report and its recommendations to advocate for increased resources needed to achieve this goal.

The next steps

1. Education and promotion of better VA care. This report has been disseminated to key national, provincial and regional leaders in vascular access for them to use to agitate for increased resources as needed.
2. The creation of regional multidisciplinary VA team if not already in place
3. Vascular access reports to regional VA teams will be given in the form of centre specific VA data and comparisons with the province and nation. (CORR process is underway)
4. Improving VA education of Fellows, Nephrologists, Surgeons and Radiologists at future CSN and other venues. Consideration of a rotating 3 year cycle of interdisciplinary full day meetings on VA at CSN AGM, vascular surgery AGM, diagnostic imaging AGM
5. Providing tools for VA patient education and VA policy/ procedures
6. Addition of a vascular access coordinator to the CSN working group, who can link this work with the VAC network
7. A report from the CSN VA working group to occur at every CSN AGM
