Council & Executive
The CSN Council consists of (1) the CSN Executive, (2) regional representation from Western Canada, Central Canada, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, (3) the Presidents of the Kidney Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Association of Pediatric Nephrologists (CAPN), and chairs of the various committees of the CSN. The Council manages the business and property of the Society, proposes new members, and arranges the annual scientific meeting of the Society.

Dr. Marcello Tonelli

President, CSN

Dr. Tonelli is an AHFMR Health Scholar and Canada Research Chair in the optimal care of people with chronic kidney disease. Dr. Tonelli is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta. He is the Chair of the Canadian Task Force for Preventive Health Care, a councillor of the International Society of Nephrology and a member of the Board of Directors for Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO).

Dr. Barbara J. Ballermann

Past President, CSN

Dr. Ballermann is a graduate of the University of Calgary (MD, 1976). She did her clinical training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal (1976-1981). She was Research Fellow and then Instructor in Medicine in the laboratory of Barry Brenner at Harvard Medical School (1981-1985) and then held faculty positions at McGill University (1985-1986), Harvard Medical School (1986-1990), Johns Hopkins University (1990-2000) and Albert Einstein College of Medicine (2000-2003). She returned home to Canada in 2003 where she is Professor of Medicine at the University of Alberta. She was Director of the Division of Nephrology until 2010 and took on the post of Chair of Internal Medicine at the University of Alberta in April 2010. Dr. Ballermann has had an active laboratory that investigates the cell biology of kidney glomerular endothelium and she is a passionate mentor of young investigators who have an interest in Kidney biology and Clinical Kidney Research.

Dr. John Gill

John Gill is a nephrologist and associate professor at the University of British Columbia. He is the president of the Canadian Organ Replacement Registry, and an associate editor for the American Journal of Transplantation.

Dr. Sanjay Pandeya

Treasurer, CSN

Dr. Pandeya completed medical school in 1995 from the University of Ottawa and both Internal Medicine and Nephrology Residencies at the University of Western Ontario in 2000 before pursuing a career as a community Nephrologist at Halton Healthcare Services in Oakville, Ontario. He is Medical Director of Peritoneal Dialysis and the Kidney Function Clinic. He is Secretary-Treasurer of the CSN.

Dr. Tammy Keough-Ryan

Dr. Tammy Keough-Ryan is a nephrologist and associate professor at Dalhousie University. She is the medical director of the kidney/pancreas transplantation program and the program director for the nephrology subspecialty training program at Dalhousie University.

Dr. Andrew House

Dr. Andrew House is a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario, and is currently the Associate Chair of the UWO Division of Nephrology, and the Site Chief of Nephrology at University Hospital. He did his training in Physiology & Pharmacology at UWO before his MD and specialist training at the University of Ottawa.

As a trained clinical epidemiologist and nephrologist, Dr. House focuses on the design and analysis of clinical trials in hemodialysis and transplantation and has a long-standing interest in the metabolism of homocysteine and its putative role as a modifiable cardiovascular risk factor. Dr. House has an established expertise in the measurement of carotid atherosclerosis as surrogate end-point, and recent work has included studies to slow progression and modify CV risk in subjects with diabetic nephropathy and chronic renal insufficiency, as well as development of novel strategies to slow progression of chronic allograft nephropathy and modify CV risk in renal transplant recipients.

Dr. Joanne Kappel

Dr. Kappel is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, where she is also the Head Division of Nephrology. She is currently the Dyad Leader for Renal Services within the Saskatoon Health Region, and the Medical Director of Chronic Kidney Disease Program. She serves as the Chair of Public Policy Council at the Kidney Foundation of Canada, where she also acts as the Saskatchewan Branch Medical Advisor. She is a member of the CORR Board.

Dr. Manish Sood

Manish M Sood is the Assistant Professor of medicine at the University of Manitoba and Medical Director of Hemodialysis at St Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He completed his undergraduate degree at Carleton University (BSc Biochem) followed by medical school, internal medicine and Nephrology Training at the University of Toronto. His research focus is on clinical outcomes of end stage renal disease patients.

Dr. Stéphan Troyanov

Dr Stéphan Troyanov is an assistant professor of clinic at the Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal. He completed his training in nephrology at the University of Montreal and his fellowship at the University of Toronto. His research interest include glomerulonephritis, clinical epidemiology and renal pathology and he holds a research scholarship from the Fonds de la Recherche en Santé du Québec.

Dr. Shao-Ling Zhang

Dr. Zhang is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, University of Montreal. Research Interests include the molecular mechanism's)by which high glucose milieu constitutes an adverse in utero environment that impairs renal development and consequently programs the offspring to develop hypertension, renal dysfunction and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Deborah Zimmerman

Dr. Zimmerman completed medicine and internal medicine residency at the University of Calgary. She finished her Nephrology Fellowship and MSc in Clinical Epidemiology in Toronto before joining the staff at the University of Ottawa in 1999. She is an associate professor and director of the home hemodialysis unit with academic commitments to teaching, research and clinical care.

Dr. James Barton

Dr. Barton graduated with a MD from Memorial University in 1994 and is currently a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. He is the chair of the CSN Education Committee.

Dr. Brenda Hemmelgarn

Chair, Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee
Member, Methods Subcomittee

Dr. Hemmelgarn is a Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Community Health Sciences, University of Calgary. Her research interests are in the study of chronic medical conditions including chronic kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, as well as health services research aimed at improving management of these chronic conditions. Dr. Hemmelgarn is involved in Clinical Practice Guideline development both nationally through the CSN and Canadian Hypertension Education Program and internationally through KDIGO.

Dr. Braden Manns

Chair, Scientific Committee

Dr. Braden Manns is an associate professor at the University of Calgary and a former Chair of the Canadian Expert Drug Advisory Committee (CEDAC) from 2006-2008. He currently serves as an associate editor of cJASN.

Dr. Verna Yiu

Chair, RCPSC Specialty Committee

Dr. Verna Yiu, Professor and divisional director for pediatric nephrology in the Faculty of Medicine/Dentistry at the U of A is an alumni of the University of Alberta, graduating in 1986 from medicine with distinction. She went onto a pediatric residency at the U of A, was Chief Resident for her 4th year before completing a Fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology at Children's Hospital, Harvard University. She returned in 1994 to the U of A as a faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Yiu advocated for her pediatric patients and helped to change the policy for organ donation in Edmonton with preference now being given to children less than 17 years of age before becoming Divisional Director for Pediatric Nephrology in 2000. Dr. Yiu continues her full time clinical activities with pediatric nephrology patients. Her research interests are primarily in the clinical realm including treatment of FSGS, hypertension, and treatment of HUS. She presently sits on an international steering committee for a thrombotic microangiopathy registry headed by Dr. Howard Trachtman in New York. She chairs the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada's Specialty Committee of Nephrology which oversees all the training programs of nephrology in Canada as well as being a member of the Advisory Board for the Gold Humanism Honors Society, based out of New York.

Dr. Andrew Wade

President, Canadian Association of Pediatric Nephrologists

Andrew Wade is a paediatric nephrologists and an associate professor of paediatrics in Calgary. He is the current president of the Canadian Association of Paediatric Nephrologists and serves as the director of paediatric dialysis at the Alberta Children's Hospital.

Kathryn Richardson

President, Kidney Foundation of Canada

Kathryn spent her early working years in public relations and media. For the last 20 years, she has been a consultant in Prime Times Strategies, a firm that specializes in working for non-profit and for-profit organizations in health and human services. She handles assignments that include communications strategy development, implementation and evaluation, qualitative research (key informant interviews, focus groups, surveys), government relations strategy and community development. A former journalist and writer at heart, Kathryn also pursues projects such as writing business profiles, websites and marketing documents.
