Scientific Committee

The CSN Scientific Committee was set up to continue the work of a prior ad hoc committee arising from the original Horizons 2000 Conference [PDF] with the main goal of advancing the cause of kidney research in Canada.

The Scientific Committee's mandate includes helping promote development of capacity for kidney research in Canada, including recruitment and retention of scientists, development and support of infrastructure, training, communications, liaison with academic centers and other national agencies, including Kidney Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Society for Transplantation.

Over the past few years, the Committee was involved in the effort to hold the Horizons 2015: Enhancing Excellence and Capacity in Kidney Research [PDF], which was held in November of 2007 with the CSN, Kidney Foundation of Canada, CST and CIHR as the lead partner agencies involved. The output of this consultative process was a report outlining the discussions during the conference.

Since then, the CSN Scientific Committee, has been working with this report to identify priorities and actionable items that lie within the mandate of the Scientific Committee. Over the past year, the CSN Scientific Committee was involved in establishing the CAnadian KidNey KNowledge TraNslation and GEneration NeTwork (CANN-NET), linking Canadian kidney disease guideline producers, knowledge translation specialists and knowledge users to improve knowledge dissemination and care of patients with kidney disease (HYPERLINK to Figure 1 – see last page). Given the urgent need for new knowledge to improve clinical care within Nephrology, CANN-NET will also bring together a national group of experienced Canadian researchers to address knowledge gaps by coordinating and executing multicentre clinical trials (Clinical Trials Network).

At the present, the CSN Scientific Committee is chaired by Braden Manns. Visit the full membership list.

The CSN created a standing Scientific Committee, to continue the work of the Ad Hoc Committee to advance the cause of kidney research in Canada, with the following longterm objectives:
