Dr. Adeera Levin

Dr. Levin is Professor of Medicine at University of BC, and Executive director of the BC Provincial Renal Agency, charged with fiscal and organizational responsibilities for renal patient care. She is the Chair of Curriculum Committee for the National KRESCENT (Kidney Research and Education Scientist Education Training Program. She is Secretary General of the International Society of Nephrology and serves on KDIGO, an international guideline development group. Research and clinical activities are focused on CKD, co morbidities in CKD, mechanisms of disease and health outcomes research. She is actively mentors young investigators in CKD related research. She was awarded the Providence Health Care Senior Scientist Research Mission Award in 2008, and the Kidney Foundation of Canada John Dossetor Research Mission award in 2009 for her contributions to Canadian Nephrology Research. She has over 200 peer reviewed publications, numerous book chapters, and is on the editorial boards of NDT, CJASN and AJKD. She is subject editor for CKD in NDT. She reviews papers for numerous Nephrology journals as well.

Dr. Beth Foster

Dr. Foster is a Pediatric Nephrologist with a masters degree in Epidemiology. She is interested in the long term outcomes of children and young adults with chronic kidney disease and with renal transplants. She also has a long standing interest and expertise in growth, nutrition and body composition in children with chronic kidney disease.

Dr. Brenda Hemmelgarn

Chair, Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee
Member, Methods Subcomittee

Dr. Hemmelgarn is a Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Community Health Sciences, University of Calgary. Her research interests are in the study of chronic medical conditions including chronic kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, as well as health services research aimed at improving management of these chronic conditions. Dr. Hemmelgarn is involved in Clinical Practice Guideline development both nationally through the CSN and Canadian Hypertension Education Program and internationally through KDIGO.

Dr. Bryce Kiberd

Dr. Bryce A. Kiberd, MD, FRCPC, is a professor of medicine at Dalhousie University and staff physician at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia. He serves as medical director of the Muli-Organ Transplant Program and the Kidney Transplant Program for Atlantic Canada. After receiving his medical training at the University of Toronto, Dr. Kiberd completed his internship and residency at Dalhousie University, and fellowships at the University of Toronto and Stanford University, Palo Alto, California. He was aksi awarded fellowships by the National Institutes of Health and the National Kidney Foundation. Dr. Kiberd received his board certification in internal medicine with specialty certification in nephrology in both Canada and the United States. He was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Kiberd's research interests include many of the medical issues and complications of kidney transplantation and kidney disease prevention strategies. He has a particular interest in using medical decision analysis to examine medical practice.

Dr. Marcello Tonelli

President, CSN

Dr. Tonelli is an AHFMR Health Scholar and Canada Research Chair in the optimal care of people with chronic kidney disease. Dr. Tonelli is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta. He is the Chair of the Canadian Task Force for Preventive Health Care, a councillor of the International Society of Nephrology and a member of the Board of Directors for Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO).

Dr. Greg Knoll

Dr. Greg Knoll is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at the University of Ottawa and at the Ottawa Hospital. He is the Medical Director of Renal Transplantation at the Ottawa Hospital and a Scientist with the Clinical Epidemiology Program of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. Dr. Knoll was the previous President of the Canadian Society of Transplantation (2008-2009). He is involved in ongoing studies related to the measurement of renal function in kidney transplant recipients, the role of ACE-inhibitors in long-term patient and graft survival, systematic reviews on immunosuppressive strategies, determinants of survival following kidney transplant failure and the long-term effects of living kidney donation. Dr. Knoll is also involved in many national and international committees pertaining to donation and transplantation issues including the Organ Expert Committee of the Canadian Blood Services mandated to design a new national system for organ donation and transplantation in Canada.

Dr. Jolanta Karpinski

Jolanta Karpinski is a Nephrologist at the Ottawa Hospital, working mostly with renal transplant patients out of the Riverside Campus. Her academic focus is in medical education particularly PGME and Continuing Professional Development with previous roles as the Nephrology Program Director in Ottawa 1999-2005, Chair of the Nephrology Specialty Committee at the RCPSC 2002-2008 and Director of the Faculty Development Office at the Faculty of Medicine in Ottawa 2005-2010.

Dr. Peter Blake

Dr. Peter Blake is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario, London, ON, Canada. He is also Chair of the Division of Nephrology at the University of Western Ontario and the London Health Sciences Centre in London, ON, Canada. His main research interests are in adequacy of dialysis and nutrition with particular regard to peritoneal dialysis. He is a member of the National Kidney Foundation DOQI Peritoneal Dialysis Workgroup and is Chair of the Canadian Society of Nephrology Workgroup on Peritoneal Dialysis Adequacy. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, The American Journal of Nephrology, Advanced Renal Replacement Therapy and Nephrology News and Issues. He is also Editor-In-Chief of Peritoneal Dialysis International. He has published over 100 papers in the area of PD and Adequacy of Dialysis in general and given over 200 invited talks in many different countries

Dr. Phil McFarlane (Member of Methods Subcommittee)

Dr. Phil McFarlane is a clinical-investigator in the Division of Nephrology at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, and an assistant professor at the University of Toronto. At St. Michael’s he is the Medical Director of Home Dialysis, the Medical Co-Director of the Multidisciplinary Diabetes Complications Clinic, and the Chief Nephrologist in the Live Kidney Donor Program. He is a member of the Canadian Diabetes Association Clinical Practice Guidelines group, the Canadian Society of Nephrology guideline group, and the Canadian Hypertension Education Program. He has completed his Ph.D. in health economics at the Institute for Medical Sciences at the University of Toronto. His areas of research interest include health economics and outcomes research. He has published over 25 peer-reviewed manuscripts and two book chapters.

Dr. Scott Klarenbach (Member of Methods Subcommittee)

Dr. Scott Klarenbach is a nephrologist, health economist, and Clinician Scientist with expertise in conducting policy relevant economic analysis in areas of kidney disease, diabetes. Cancer, and obesity. He is chair of the CSN clinical practice guidelines methodology subcommittee, chair of the economic outcomes subgroup of the Canadian Hypertension Education Program, and serves on the Canadian Optimal Medication Prescribing and Utilization Service (COMPUS) Expert Review Committee (CERC) that is responsible for developing guidelines informed by effectiveness and cost-effectiveness considerations.
